Magnetic lashes: how do they work, and are they right for you?

Magnetic lashes are false lashes with small magnets in the band. Also known as magnetic lashes, they attach to a matching magnetic eyeliner or a second lash strip, with your natural lashes between them. Not every system therefore needs eyeliner.

The idea is appealing: a fuller lash look without separate lash glue. However, the system affects application, removal and the result. Below, we explain what to consider before choosing a set.

How do magnetic lashes work?

Magnetic lashes with eyeliner

With this version, you draw a line using a magnetic eyeliner designed for the lashes. The magnets in the lash band attach to that line. Ordinary eyeliner does not automatically work this way.

The number of layers needed and when to place the lashes vary by formula. Follow the drying time on your packaging. An eyeliner with an adhesive function is also not automatically the same product as magnetic eyeliner.

Magnetic lashes without eyeliner

In a system with two matching strips, the magnets meet above and below your natural lashes, sandwiching them in between. You do not need to draw on magnetic eyeliner, but you do need to align the two parts carefully.

Check the set description. ‘Without lash glue’ does not automatically mean ‘without eyeliner’: that depends on the attachment method.

Which system suits your routine?

Option May suit you if… Point to consider
With magnetic eyeliner You like a visible eyeliner line. The line needs to meet the magnets; the liner must also be removed afterwards.
With two strips You prefer not to use magnetic eyeliner. Aligning the upper and lower parts takes practice.
Strip lashes with adhesive You prefer working with a lash band and matching adhesive. The fit and the adhesive instructions determine how to apply them.

The best system is not the same for everyone. Consider the look you want, how easily you apply eyeliner and how much time you want to spend practising a new technique.

How do you apply magnetic lashes?

First check whether you have a set with eyeliner or with two strips. Work with clean hands, clean tools and good lighting. Do not use a damaged lash band or loose magnets.

A set with magnetic eyeliner

  1. Check the fit. Check the length according to the product instructions. Only trim if the manufacturer permits it; you do not want to remove a magnet or a necessary attachment point.
  2. Apply the matching eyeliner. Follow the instructions for thickness, layers and drying time. Apply the liner to the intended skin area of the upper eyelid, not the waterline.
  3. Place the lash band. Let the magnets connect with the eyeliner and check the ends especially. Reposition only as allowed by the instructions.
  4. Check the fit. Blink gently. The band should not poke your eye corner or pull on your natural lashes.

A set with two magnetic strips

Use the upper and lower parts that belong together according to the packaging. Align them using the recommended applicator or method and let the magnets connect. Keep your eyelid skin clear of the closure. If it does not work, separate the parts according to the instructions and start again. Do not force them shut.

Why will my magnetic lashes not stay on?

For a liner system, first check the connection between the magnets and the line. A broken line, incorrect drying time, product residue on the magnets or an unsuitable fit can interfere with attachment.

For a two-strip system, focus on whether the correct parts face each other and the magnets connect properly. Do not simply add ordinary lash glue to secure an ill-fitting set. Try again with a clean, intact set once you have addressed the cause.

How long do magnetic lashes stay on?

There is no single wear time for all magnetic lashes. The system, fit and, for a liner system, the eyeliner determine how long the attachment holds well. Treat your set's maximum wear time as the limit, and remove the lashes before sleeping.

If an end lifts or the band starts to poke, remove the lashes sooner. A claim such as ‘all day’ does not guarantee that every set will remain comfortable on every eye for the same length of time. Wear time per use is also different from the number of times you can reuse the lashes.

How do you remove and clean magnetic lashes?

Carefully remove the lashes according to the manufacturer's instructions. With two strips, separate the magnetic connection first; do not pull the closed parts together off your natural lashes.

For a liner system, then remove the eyeliner with a suitable eye makeup remover. The method for your eyelid may differ from cleaning the separate lash band. Only use the recommended cleaning method on the magnets, and store the lashes clean and dry.

Frequently asked questions about magnetic lashes

Are magnetic lashes bad for your eyes?

Magnetic lashes are not without risk. Even without separate lash glue, the eyeliner or lash band can cause irritation. Whether a set is suitable depends partly on your eyes and the products used. Stop if symptoms occur. If you have an eye condition or react easily to eye makeup, discuss their use with your clinician.

Can you use mascara with magnetic lashes?

Some sets allow mascara on your natural lashes before application; check whether your set permits this. Do not assume you can apply mascara to the magnetic lash band or magnets. Residue makes cleaning harder and can affect the shape and lifespan of the false lashes.

If your main aim is to blend your natural lashes neatly, start with a suitable lash style. Mascara is optional and does not replace a well-fitting band.

Can you sleep with magnetic lashes?

Remove them before sleeping and take off any eyeliner. Store the cleaned lashes in their box. Do not leave them on just because they still seem firmly attached at the end of the evening.

Are magnetic lashes waterproof?

You cannot tell from the magnets alone. The properties of the complete set and any eyeliner determine what the manufacturer allows. Water-resistant eyeliner is not a general guarantee that you can swim or shower with the lashes.

How often can you reuse them?

Follow the advice for the set and check its condition after each use. Replace lashes if the band is damaged, magnets are loose or residue cannot be removed as instructed. No fixed number of wears applies to all magnetic lashes.

Can you place regular lashes on magnetic eyeliner?

Regular strip lashes without magnets do not attach through magnetic attraction. Only if a product is also explicitly intended as a suitable lash adhesive or adhesive liner might it have another attachment mechanism. Do not assume this of ordinary magnetic eyeliner.

Prefer a full or half lash band?

If a magnetic system does not suit your routine, explore By Dash Beauty false lashes and our half lashes for an outer-corner accent.

Our full and half strip lashes have PBT fibres and can be reused up to 20 times with proper care. Clean them after each use and store them clean and completely dry in their box.
