Applying half lashes: a beginner's step-by-step guide

Your half lash is ready, but where exactly does that short band go? These five steps add volume to your outer corners. See where to place the lash and what helps when a corner lifts.

Have ready: half lashes, glue for strip lashes, an applicator or clean fingers, and a mirror you can hold slightly below eye level.

Applying half lashes in 5 steps

1. Start with a clean, dry lash line

Wash and dry your hands. Make sure the skin where the band will sit is free from oil and cream, as residue can affect adhesion. Have your mirror and applicator ready so you can apply the lashes calmly.

2. Check the fit of both lashes without glue

Carefully remove the lash from the tray by its band. Hold it along the outer part of your upper lash line. The band follows your eye shape; the end should not extend past your outer corner.

Also look with relaxed, open eyes. Check both sides before applying glue. A half lash is already shorter than a full strip: do not automatically trim it; follow your lash product's instructions.

Check the fit first, then apply glue. This is the time to practise positioning. Does the band feel comfortable, and can you see the desired effect with open eyes? Then you are ready for glue.

3. Use a thin layer of lash glue

Spread glue for strip lashes along the band, right to both ends. Let it become tacky as directed; waiting time varies by product. Too much glue, or glue that is too wet, makes precise placement harder. Do not use glue intended for professional lash extensions.

White or black? White By Dash Beauty lash glue dries clear. Black glue remains visible as a dark accent.

4. Look down and press the band into place

Hold your mirror slightly below eye level. Look down and hold the lash by the band with your applicator or clean fingers. Place it on the skin just above your natural upper lashes, where you checked the fit.

Gently press down the band, then both ends. Keep the applicator away from your eye. These half lashes attach above the lash line, not underneath or on the waterline.

Watch the application technique in 20 seconds

This video shows how to apply glue to the band and gently press the lash into place. The demonstration uses a full strip. For half lashes, place the short band only on the outer part of your upper lash line, as shown in step 2.

Please note when checking the fit: the video shows a full strip being trimmed. Half lashes are already shorter; do not automatically trim them.Footage: By Dash Beauty · Watch the video on TikTok.

5. Check the result with open eyes

Look straight ahead. Does the band follow your lash line, and are the ends secure? Let the glue finish drying as directed. Do not pull on the fibres to change the position.

Is the band positioned incorrectly or uncomfortable? Follow the steps for gentle removal and try the fit again once the skin is clean and dry. Your first attempt does not have to be perfect.

Is a corner lifting? What you can adjust

The lash slides during placement
The glue may still be too wet or applied too thickly. Gently release the band and try again with a thin layer and the specified waiting time.
One end keeps lifting
Check that glue reaches that end and that the band follows your eye shape. Check the fit again without glue if the position is wrong.
You can see a gap above your natural lashes
The band may be too high. Next time, position it closer to the natural lash line while keeping it on the skin.
Your outer corner seems to point downwards
Check whether the band extends past the eye corner. Follow the natural lash line when checking the fit.
The band pokes or irritates
Gently remove the lash according to the removal steps below. Do not keep pressing to resolve discomfort, and stop using the product if irritation occurs.

Half lashes or a full strip?

Half lasheshave a shorter band and mainly add volume to the outer part of your eye. A full strip covers more of the lash line.

Remove gently and store carefully

For our black and white lash glue, an oil-based makeup remover is sufficient to loosen the glue. Here is how to remove half lashes and glue residue carefully:

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Apply an oil-based makeup remover suitable for eye makeup to a cotton pad. Follow the remover's instructions.
  2. Close your eye and hold the cotton pad against the lash band to soften the glue. Then slowly and gently wipe along the band.
  3. Carefully remove the false lash from the outer corner once the band releases easily. Feel resistance? Let the glue soften further and do not pull on your natural lashes.
  4. Gently remove any remaining glue from your eyelid and natural lashes with the remover. Do not rub hard or pull on the hairs, and keep remover out of your eye.
  5. Hold the band of the removed false lashes. You can often gently peel the glue from the band in one strip. Do not pull on the lash fibres. Gently loosen remaining glue with the remover and store the lashes only when completely dry.

Store clean, dry lashes in their tray. Find more guidance in our guide to cleaning and storing false lashes. Using a different lash glue? Follow that product's removal instructions.

Frequently asked questions about half lashes

Are half lashes easier for beginners?

A shorter band can be easier to align than a full strip. You only work at the outer part of your eye. Checking the fit and allowing the correct waiting time for the glue remain important.

Do you apply half lashes above or below your natural lashes?

Apply the By Dash Beauty half lashes in this guide to the skin just above your natural upper lash line. They are not clusters applied underneath your lashes. Curious about how those work? Read what cluster lashes are.

Should you apply mascara before or after half lashes?

If you use mascara, first apply a thin coat to your natural lashes and let it dry before placing your half lashes. This helps your natural lashes blend with the half lashes. You do not need to coat the false lashes themselves with mascara.

Which lash glue should you use for half lashes?

Use strip lash glue, not glue for professional lash extensions. The white By Dash Beauty lash glue dries clear; the black lash glue stays dark. Apply a thin layer to the band and follow the instructions for the waiting time. Our black and white glue can be loosened with an oil-based eye make-up remover. Follow the steps for gentle removal.

Can I cut a full strip in half?

This does not automatically give the same result as ready-made half lashes. The shape of the band and the distribution of the fibres may differ. Follow the instructions for the specific product.

How long do half lashes stay on?

This depends on the glue, preparation, fit and wearing conditions. There is no fixed wear time for every combination. Follow your glue's instructions.

Can I reuse half lashes?

Yes, if they are suitable for reuse and the band and fibres remain clean and intact. How often you can reuse them also depends on how you remove and care for them.
